Happy Birthday, Jamestown

The mysteries of the founding of Virginia and of the nation are hidden in the soils of our Commonwealth.  Dr. William Kelso, the renowned archaeologist who was honored as the Virginian of the Year in 2005, will speak about his discoveries at Jamestown and Monticello that have shaped our world view of the first English settlers and Mr. Jefferson.  Dr. Kelso has been described as … full of excitement, like a kid when he stumbles on a discovery.  It’s like Christmas to him…it’s contagious. The event will be held in the handsome new library at the University of Virginia , the Mary and David Harrison Institute for American History, Literature, and Culture. Chat with Dr. Kelso at the reception following the presentation while savoring varied hors d’oeuvres and award-winning wine from Barboursville Vineyards.

Arts Alive:  A Downtown Festival

Consider these ingredients for a memorable evening:  Grecian cuisine in a downtown art gallery and a Broadway play based on the myths that inspire Western civilization.  Begin the evening at the charming Les Yeux du Monde Art Gallery in downtown Charlottesville where you will enjoy a Grecian supper which concludes with a medley of Greek desserts.  Then stroll to the Live Arts theatre for a production of Metamophoses, a 2002 Broadway play based on Ovid’s tales that are thousands of years old, but that still matter today.  Critic Matthew Murray describes it as a play which infuses Ovid’s tales with a frequently modern, often funny, and always entertaining sensibility. It is powerful, moving, and funny, right up to its final touching moments.
